Violet E. (Gehrig) Schaeffer

With her sons by her side, Violet E. (Gehrig) Schaeffer, 98, of Laureldale, passed away Monday, October 17th in Tower Health-Reading Hospital. She was a recent resident at Keystone Villa at Fleetwood.

Violet was the wife of the late Robert L. Schaeffer who passed away November 9, 1990, after being married for 37 years.

Born in Schuylkill Haven, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Gehrig and Ella Nora (Gerhard) Gehrig.

Violet was a 1942 graduate of Muhlenberg High School.

She was the Laureldale Borough Secretary from 1971 until 1989.

Violet had a strong faith and as a young person, attended Epiphany Lutheran Church in Temple, where she was an active member of their Luther League, both at the local and national level. As an adult, she became a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Reading where she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, sang in the choir, and assisted with the finances of the church.

She was a member of the Golden Rule Chapter 390 Order of The Eastern Star. She was also a den mother and council member for Cub Scout Pack 223 as well as a member of the Reading Choral Society.

Surviving are two loving sons, Scott A. Schaeffer and wife Judy of Laureldale and Jeffrey R. Schaeffer and wife Kathy of Temple.

There are four grandchildren, Becky DiLuzio and husband Jon, Matt Schaeffer and wife Amanda, Josh Schaeffer and his fiancé Cheryl Boutwell, and Ben Schaeffer and his girlfriend Kathryn Trujillo. Also, four great grandchildren, Delani and Corbin Walker and Carter and Jaxon Schaeffer.

Violet was predeceased by her brother, Paul Gehrig who is survived by his wife Josephine Gehrig and their daughter, Judy Gehrig.

A funeral service will he held on Monday, October 24th at 11 am in Hope Lutheran Church, 601 N. Front St., Reading, PA 19601 with Pastor Mary Wolfe officiating.

A viewing will be held in the church from 9:30 am until 11:00 am on Monday morning.

Interment will follow in Charles Evans Cemetery.
