Sara “Emily” (Heiser) Weidner, 93, of Temple, passed away on June 12, 2021 at KeystoneVilla in Fleetwood.
Born on May 6, 1928, she was a daughter to the late Leroy F. and Marion (Frees) Heiser. Emily was a 1945 graduate of Reading High School and went on to attend Reading Hospital School of Nursing where she was known as “Spike” and graduated as a registered nurse in 1949. She worked for Reading Hospital as an RN for 13 years until her retirement in 1968. Emily was the wife of the late Robert Earl Weidner, with whom she shared 36 years of marriage until his time of passing on November 21, 1987.
Emily was an avid tennis player. She also was a Bluebird and Campfire Girl leader.
Emily loved biking and was often seen riding around town. She was a charter member of The Berks County Bicycle Club. She was also an Effective Bicycling Instructor with the League of American Wheelmen. Emily loved being an instructor and even went into schools and taught children how important it was to ride safely and wear a helmet. Emily was instrumental in getting bike racks on BARTA buses and getting “Share the Road” signs put up around Muhlenberg Township. Along with her friends, she has taken many bicycle trips, including, to the Canadian Rockies, around the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes in NY and around the perimeter of PA as well as many other places. Emily even published “Berks Bars to Bike to”, a map of local bars where riders could follow directions to ride to. She was recognized as an outstanding volunteer for over 20 years of service on the Schuylkill River Trail System, by the Schuylkill River Greenway Association and was also a part of the Adopt A Highway Program for many years. Emily was a devoted member of the former Epiphany Lutheran Church in Temple. When Epiphany Lutheran Church closed Emily became a member of Calvary Lutheran where she served on the Board for many years. Emily also was an avid Scrabble player and enjoyed reading. Emily will be remembered by her two of her favorite sayings: “If you haven’t changed your mind lately, are you sure you have one?” and “People are more important than things”.
Emily is survived by her loving daughters, Nancy E. (Weidner) Christensen and Sandra E. Weidner, companion of Thomas Hatrak both of Colorado and a daughter-in-law, Joanne M. (Scheidt) Weidner of Leesport. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Sara Weidner, Jennifer Gherardini and Melissa Christensen, 3 great- grandchildren and one half-brother, Robert C. Heiser, husband of Ann C., of Schnecksville.
She was predeceased by one son, Michael A. Weidner in 2004 and one great-grandson Michael Gherardini.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am with a Memorial Service beginning at 11:00 am at Milkins Trymbiski Funeral Home, 4914 Kutztown Road, Temple, Pennsylvania 19560.
