Russell G. Riegel, 85, of Myerstown, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, January 28th in the Reading Hospital.
Russell is married to Betty A. (Parker) Riegel also of Myerstown. Russell and Betty would celebrate sixty five years of marriage in March.
Born in Penn Twp., he is the son of the late Irvin O. Riegel and Edna E. (Bechtel) Riegel.
Russell grew up in Mt Pleasant Penn Township. He graduated from Penn High School in 1948
Russell was employed as a carpenter for 20 years in early adulthood.
He was the Fire Marshall and Safety Manager at the Wernersville State Hospital from 1968-1992
He worked part-time in retirement at the Berks County Heritage Center from 1993-2014 and volunteered as a guide there from 1989-2014.
He was a active member of Bern United Church of Christ serving on the Consistory and Property Committee.
He was an active volunteer fireman with the Mt. Pleasant Fire Company for 63 years; serving as Assistant Chief from 1953 to 1956 and Chief from 1957 to 1962 then again in 1964.
He served with the Berks County Fire Training as an instructor and fire safety instructor at Three Mile Island.
He served on the first Penn Township Planning Commission-Vice Chairman and Chairman through 1980.
Surviving with his wife Betty are three children, Glenn I. Riegel and wife Alane of Bethel, Christine A. Forry and husband Richard of Bernville, and Rebecca G. Riegel of Akron, PA.
There are four grandchildren, Brett and Joshua Forry and Tyler and Aaron Riegel. Also, two great grandchildren, Lucas and Faith Forry.
There is one sister, Evelyn Reese and husband John of Lansdale.
Also, a cousin David Weidenhammer.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 6th at Noon in Bern United Church of Christ, 3196 Bernvlle Rd., Route 183, Leesport, PA 19533 with Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.
Family and friends may attend a visitation with the family on Saturday in the church from 11 am until time of service.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Bern Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bern U.C.C. Endowment Fund at the above address and Mt. Pleasant Fire Co., Apparatus Fund, 5664 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Bernville, PA 19506.
Following the service we will honor Russell's many years of fire service to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Co. with a funeral procession that will proceed on Route 183 to the fire co.
