Robert Giamotti

June 9, 1920 — February 26, 2014

Robert (Bob) Giamotti, 93,CDR, USN, Retired 1993, passed away after a brief bout of pneumonia, on February 26, 2014.

He was born on June 9, 1920 to James and Philomena (DiCicco) Giamotti of Temple. Bob was the youngest son of Italian parents.

He was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School where he excelled in sports, especially baseball and basketball. Bob was one the first Italian American in the neighborhood to graduate from college in 1942 from Albright College, where he received his degree in Economics. He then attended Chapel Hill Naval Academy where he started his naval career as an Ensign and the flight navigator for the Naval Air Transportation Arena.

He was inducted into the Muhlenberg High School Hall of Fame for athletics, scholastic, and career category on November 28, 2003.

Always wanting to do something new, in1948 Bob started his sea duty as commanding officer of many ships. In 1956 Bob's new assignment was at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, teaching navigation/ seamanship. He became the Asst. Ops and Scheduling
Officer for the entire sixth fleet in the Mediterranean.

Although being at sea was his passion, shore duty at the Pentagon lead to an opportunity to pursue his masters in business administration and many career moves including OPNV Head Fleet Organization and Special Studies and Presentations Group, where he was a researcher and presenter of SEA POWER movies across the country to various service organizations.

After a 27 year career, Bob retired in 1969, moving his family to Castine, Maine, where he took the position of Assistant Commandant of Midshipmen at Maine Maritime Academy. He indoctrinated several classes of "MUGS", midshipmen under guidance, during his first five years receiving commendations for his indoctrination program.

Returning to his love of sports, Bob became Director of Public Relations and Sports Information Director at Maine Maritime Academy.
In 1998, MMA honored Bob as a loyal supporter of intercollegiate athletics. On April 1, 2001, he was cited by the MMA athletics director "in his recognition of more than a quarter of a century of dedicated service to MMA.

In addition to his loyal service to the US Navy and Maine Maritime Academy, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and the American Legion.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Marguerite Ott, Elsie Levan, Dorothy Delcollo and brother, Freddie Giamotti. His wife of 51 years, Charlotte (McGriff) Giamotti, passed away on December 8, 2002.



Bob is survived by daughters, Roberta-Anne(Giamotti) McCartan, son-in-law, Kevin and only grandson Patrick, from South Portland, Maine, Tina Giamotti, Rosemary (Giamotti) Duncan and husband Jim, sister Rita (Giamotti) Gaspari of Muhlenberg Twp., nephews JIm Giamotti and family, Bob Ott and family, Ray Gaspari and family, Maurice Levan and family, nieces, Gina (Gaspari) Quinter and family, Rosanne (Gaspari) Sparr and family, Trish( DelCollo) Cronan and family, JuliaLee (DelCollo) Kleiman-Baer and family, and Veronica (DelCollo) Eckel and family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in March in Holy Cross Church, South Portland, ME.

Cemetery services will be held in Castine, ME on May 30th.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, Chapel of Divine Mercy, on Monday June 9th at 6pm.

The Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc., Temple, is entrusted with the local funeral arrangements.
