Robert E. Baker of Cornwall Manor and previously of Berks and Cumberland counties, husband of the late Barbara A. (Kilheffer) Baker, died Friday, March 7, 2014, at home just days after celebrating his 89th birthday with his extended family. He was the son of the late Harold and Anna (Hoover) Baker.
Born March 4, 1925, in New Cumberland, he was a 1942 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School and a 1949 graduate of Lebanon Valley College with a B.S. in chemistry.
He was a longtime resident of Muhlenberg Township and was retired after 37 years of service from the Glidden Paint Co. in Reading. Prior to that, he taught chemistry at Drexel University.
He was a past president of the Industrial Management Club of Berks County and was a member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church of Laureldale, where he had served in numerous capacities including president of Congregation Council.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day and throughout the remainder of the war in Europe with the 81st Chemical Mortar Battalion.
He was an avid gardener throughout his life and served Berks County as a Penn State Master Gardener. He continued to pursue that interest after relocating to Cornwall Manor, serving on its Building & Grounds and Tree committees.
He is survived by children Virginia, wife of Steven Hoffman of Seaford, Del.; Robin, wife of the late Robert Thomson of Parker, Colo.; Paul, husband of Tracy Allgier-Baker of Annville; and Deborah, wife of Neil Buckley of Overland Park, Kan.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He and his wife had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary prior to her death in 2010.
He was also preceded in death by daughter Margaret A. Baker in 1983.
His funeral will take place at noon Friday at Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc., 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple, preceded by visitation beginning at 11:30. Interment will follow in Laureldale Cemetery.
