Reverend Charles Edward Fair

REV. CHARLES EDWARD FAIR

Our Lord has called home His faithful servant, Charles Edward Fair, Pastor Emeritus of Alsace Lutheran Church, on July 19, 2018 in the skilled care unit of the Highlands at Wyomissing. Born November 11, 1926 in New Brighton, PA, he was a son of the late John D. and Anna (Erath) Fair.

He was the husband of C. Louise (Balas) Fair of the Highlands at Wyomissing.

Pastor Fair graduated from Thiel College, Greenville, PA in 1947 and attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia where he earned his Master of Divinity Degree in 1950 and his Master of Sacred Theology Degree in 1954. He organized and served as first pastor of Lynnwood Lutheran Church, Belle Vernon, PA from 1949 to 1951. He then served as associate pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Philadelphia from 1951 to 1953. Pastor Fair also organized and was the first pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Levittown, PA from 1953 to 1959, that being the largest church ever organized in the Lutheran Church of America.

He went on to serve as Senior Pastor of Alsace Lutheran Church, Reading from 1960 until his retirement in 1993 during which time he preached on the "Alsace Lutheran Hour" on Radio WRAW all 33 years. He had many preaching opportunities including serving as interim pastor at several area Lutheran churches after his retirement.

Pastor Fair is also survived by two sons, Daniel C. Fair, US Air Force retired and his wife Elizabeth of Reading and Jonathan E. Fair, US Air Force retired and his wife Lisa of Woodbridge, VA. He was predeceased by a daughter, Rebecca L. who was the wife of Theodore R. Williams of Reading. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Michael C., husband of Robin, Aaron E. and Matthew G. Williams; Asher C. and Joanna D. Fair; Jonathan P., Bethany E. and Isaac J. Fair; and one great granddaughter, Sydney R. Williams. Also a family friend, Dr. Stanley M. Wicks.


Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at 2:00 PM in Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd. Wyomissing, PA with the Rev. Ryan Hersch and Rev. Fred Opalinski officiating. Burial in Charles Evans Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM in the Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc. 4914 Kutztown Rd. Temple, PA.
