Paul C. Dunkelberger, died peacefully in his home at The Highlands on July 1st, 2016, at the age of 99. He was born in Leesport, PA on December 25th, 1916 to Charles B. And Amy Stitzel Dunkelberger. Paul and his 12 siblings grew up on a farm in Leesport.
He was married to Evelyn Moyer Dunkelberger for 57 years until her death in 1998. They had two daughters, Janet Evelyn Dunkelberger, wife of Eli Caplan of Philadelphia and Lois Ann Dunkelberger, who is married to Albert Trexler of Exton. He is also survived by three beloved grandchildren: Dana Trexler Smith, Sloan David Caplan, married to Rebecca Fox Caplan and Chad Peter Trexler, married to Taryn D'Ambroggi Trexler. He has seven great grandchildren: Madison and Jordan Smith: Caralina, Cate and Scarlett Caplan: Wynne and Reed Trexler.
He was preceded in death by his long time friend and companion, Rene Snyder Oberholtzer of Wyomissing who died in 2012.
He was a 1935 graduate of Ontelaunee High School. He graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. degree in 1939 at which time he entered the teaching profession. He continued his education while teaching earning a M.S. from Penn State University and a M.A. degree from Lehigh University.
He was Superintendent of Schools of Kutztown, Owen J. Roberts and Lebanon High Schools. He retired in December 1979. After retirement he was co-owner of a local travel agency in Lebanon for five years.
He was a long time Rotarian, being a club president, district governor, a "Paul Harris Fellow" and the recipient of the Rotary International "Lifetime Achievement Award".
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge belonging to both the Huguenot Lodge in Kutztown and the Mt Lebanon Lodge in Lebanon. In addition, he belonged to the Masonic Consistory and Shrine Club of Reading.
Paul was an active church member and an elder in both the United
Church of Christ in Kutztown and the Presbyterian denomination in Lebanon.
A celebration of Paul's life will be held Saturday, July 9th, starting with a viewing from ten to eleven and a service at eleven in the Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc., 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple, followed by interment at St. John's Gernants Church Cemetery, Leesport.
Officiating the service will be Rev. Bruce Dalious.
