Mary Ann Watts, 87, of Bernville, passed away Sunday March 22nd in Manor Care in West Reading. She is survived by her husband of almost sixty four years, Spencer R. Watts.
Born in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Major Allan Brown and Elana Susan (Robinson) Brown.
Mary Ann graduated from John Harris High School in Harrisburg. She then graduated from Cheyney State Teacher's College in Cheyney, PA in 1949 with a BS Degree in Education. She did graduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia and Penn State University in Harrisburg. She received a BA Degree in Professional Writing from Penn State University in Berks County in 2007, becoming the oldest graduate that year. She educated children for thirty six years in the Harrisburg, Baltimore, and Reading school districts.
Mary Ann was a member of St. Thomas Church in Bernville.
Mary Ann served her community for many years. She was an elected official serving on the Bernville Borough Council for twenty eight years and was a member of the Berks County Boroughs Assoc.
She was a member of the PA and National Educational Assoc., Central PA African American Museum, Reading Co. Technical and Historical Society, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and GFWC Women's Club of Bernville.
Mary Ann was a gifted writer obtaining her first writing award in 1945 for the National Tuberculosis Society essay contest. Most recently she contributed to two books on Berks County and throughout her life contributed articles to local newspapers. She was a two time cancer survivor and wrote an article in 1994 for the Reading Eagle about surviving cancer.
In addition to her husband, she leaves to mourn with many wonderful memories three children, Shelley Watts of Harrisburg, Allison Watts of Carlisle, and Howard Watts of Bernville.
She is also survived by her sister, Doris, wife of Carl Hollins of Florida. She is predeceased by a brother, Major Allan Brown, Jr.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 27th at 11 am in St. Thomas Church, 536 N. Main St., Bernville with Rev. William Miller officiating. Interment will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery in Bernville. Family and friends may call Friday morning from 9:30 am until time of service in the church.
