Harold F. George, Jr. 91 of Muhlenberg Township died Friday morning in the Reading Hospital. He was the widower of Eleanor E. (Weaver) George who died September 26, 2010. They had shared a marriage of sixty years. They were married June 14, 1950.
Harold was born in Reading. He was the son of the late Harold F. Sr. and Mary E. (Wummer) George. He grew up in Laureldale and graduated in the class of 1944 from Muhlenberg High School.
Surviving are two sons; Mark A. husband of Renee D. George of Muhlenberg Township, and Harold F. husband of Jessica L. George of Bernville. Also, six grandchildren; Gregory S. Bickta, Danielle R., Anthony M., Taylor N., Morgan H., and Edyn A. George. Two great grandchildren; Abbygael L. and Benjamin T. Bonilla. A son, Thomas R. George, and a sister Jean Snyder predeceased him.
He served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps.
Harold's first employment was with the former Chapin Lumber Company of Temple. He later became a mechanic for the former Leiberneckct Knitting Mills of Laureldale. Also, he owner and operated the former Esso Station located at Fourth and Pine Streets, Reading. He found his career in plumbing, heating and air conditioning working for Corbits and G.W. Wien. Lastly, his career was completed when he became a member of Steam Fitters Local Union #420 which he was a member for nearly twenty years.
For thirty one years he was a member of the Muhlenberg Township Parks and Recreation Board. He had been a daily dog walker at the Humane Society and Animal Rescue League until he found his trusted dachshund, Pinky. He was a member of the Chess Club at the Reading YMCA, a member of Bridge Club at the Reading Eagle Bridge Room.
Harold had a "heart of gold' and would be kind to anyone. In his retirement years he rode and cared for horses at the stables in Maidencreek and Perry Townships
Funeral services from Milkins Giles Funeral Home, Inc. Temple on Friday at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Daniel Lute officiating. Internment in Laureldale Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and Friday one hour prior to the funeral service
