George was a devoted member of St. Thomas Church, Bernville, where he served for 40 years in various capacities, including recording secretary and president of the Consistory, as a deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. Every Sunday morning found him at the doors of St. Thomas, where he welcomed churchgoers with open arms, a warm smile, and handshake. He also served as president for a number of years of St. Thomas Cemetery and Haag Cemetery, both in Bernville.
George honorably and faithfully served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1943 through 1945 in World War II in the Pacific Theatre, participating in the Bismark Archepeligo Operation and the Philippine Islands Campaign. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in December 1945. He was called back to active duty in 1951 during the Korean War and was on his way to Korea when a cease-fire was declared.
He was honorably discharged a second time with the rank of sergeant. He was a lifetime member of the R. M. Butterweck Detachment, Berks County, Pa, Marine Corps League. He conducted his life with the spit and polish worthy of a Marine and was devoted to the Corps to the end. Semper Fi!
