Emily G. Shalter, 92, of South Temple, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 24th in the Reading Hospital.
She was married to the late John L. Shalter who passed away July 26, 1965.
Born in Worcester, MA, she was the daughter of the late Paul B. Greenawald and Helen M. (Adam) Greenawald.
She graduated from Muhlenberg High School in 1940, at the age of 16, as valedictorian of her class. She graduated with honors from Ursinus College in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and German.
Emily taught at the former West Reading High School from 1944 until 1947. Subsequently she was a substitute teacher in Muhlenberg High School from 1947 until 1965. From 1966 until 1986 she taught on a full-time basis the subjects of English, German, and Spanish in the Muhlenberg Schools.
Church life was important to her. She was a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Temple where she was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher.
A voracious reader, upon retiring Emily worked as a volunteer at the Muhlenberg Community Library.
She will be remembered by her nieces and nephews for the many loving gifts of afghans, table clothes, and other items she sewed for them.
Over the years she enjoyed visiting with her brothers in various venues throughout the United States in addition to accompanying them on extended trips to Europe.
She took great pleasure in planning high school class reunions, family holiday dinners, and neighborhood picnics.
She followed pro sports on the rare occasions the Philadelphia teams were good.. Her favorite pro athlete was Shane Victorino and her least favorite pro athlete was Kobe Bryant.
She enjoyed watching movies. Her favorites were Gone With The Wind and The Sound of Music.
She loved being in the company of her devoted little dog "Lucky".
Surviving are two children, David P. Shalter and Diane L. Shalter both of Temple.
There are two brothers, Dr.Henry A. Greenawald of Harrisburg and Dr. Kenneth A. Greenawald of Harbor Springs, Michigan. She is predeceased by a brother Ralph A. Greenawald.
Also, there are 13 nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered by two devoted caregivers, Shirley Huhn and Kathy Bethke, whose extraordinary care and companionship the family greatly appreciates.
Emily was a loving, warm, and welcoming friend who will be long remembered by many.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 9th at 11am in the Milkins Giles Funeral Home Inc., 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple with Rev. Dr. Harry L. Serio officiating.
Family and friends may attend a visitation with the family on Saturday morning from 10 until 11 am in the funeral home.
Interment will be private at Charles Evans Cemetery.
