CHARLES I. HAMILTON, 91 OF EXETER TOWNSHIP DIED DECEMBER 15TH, 2013 IN BERKSHIRE COMMONS WHERE HE HAD BEEN A PATIENT SINCE NOVEMBER 29TH.
BORN IN MASONTOWN, FAYETTE COUNTY, PA, HE WAS A SON OF THE LATE EUGENE W. AND IDA MAE (PATTON) HAMILTON.
HE SERVED AS A CIVILIAN AGENT IN THE TRANSPORTATION OFFICE OF THE US AIR FORCE FROM 1943 TO 1946 AND WAS A 1941 GRADUATE OF GERMAN TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL, McCLELLANDTOWN, PA. HE WAS THE FIRST STUDENT THERE TO OBTAIN BOTH A LAND AND SEAPLANE PILOT'S LICENSE WHILE IN THE ELEVENTH GRADE.
HE GRADUATED FROM CALIFORNIA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE, CALIFORNIA, PA IN 1947 AND OBTAINED HIS MASTERS OF EDUCATION DEGREE FROM TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, PHILADELPHIA IN 1962 AND HIS DOCTOR OF EDUCATION DEGREE IN 1972 FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, CORAL GABLES, FL AND EAST COAST UNIVERSITY, DADE CITY, FL.
DR. HAMILTON TAUGHT 2 YEARS AT GERMAN TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN TAUGHT SOCIAL STUDIES, GEOGRAPHY AND DRIVERS EDUCATION AT POTTSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL FOR 29 YEARS UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1977. AT THAT TIME, HE WAS ONE OF ONLY TEN PEOPLE CERTIFIED TO TEACH DRIVERS EDUCATION IN THE COUNTRY. AFTER RETIREMENT HE WAS A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER AT BOTH THE EXETER AND DANIEL BOONE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN BERKS COUNTY.
DR. HAMILTON WAS A FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE EXETER AREA CRIME WATCH FOR 8 YEARS, A REPRESENTATIVE FROM POTTSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT TO THE NATIONAL SAFETY CONGRESS, CHICAGO, IL FOR 5 YEARS, A FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE PENNSYLVANIA DRIVERS EDUCATION ASSN. AND A CHARTER MEMBER OF RETIRED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES OF BERKS COUNTY. HE WAS A MEMBER OF OLIVET REFORMED UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, READING, AND A MEMBER OF BOTH VALLEY LODGE #459 F & AM, MASONTOWN AND THE BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS, UNIONTOWN, PA.
HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS COMPANION OF 64 YEARS, ISADORE E. SCHOLL OF EXETER TWP. AND 3 NIECES, GAIL HAUSKNECHT, IVYLAND, BUCKS CO., DENISE VIDONISH, CANONSBURG, WASHINGTON COUNTY AND SHELLEY PINION OF VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.
GRAVESIDE SERVICES ARE PRIVATE AT THE CONVENIENCE OF THE FAMILY FROM TRINITY UCC CEMETERY, REHRERSBERG.
