Arlyne Demmy Meyer of Temple, PA died May 11. She was born August 12, 1918 in Manheim, PA and raised in Lititz, PA.
She had been actively involved in her communities all of her life but her loves were politics, the theater, and most importantly, her family.
Her participation in politics took her to state and national inaugurations and inaugural balls. She served as a Republican committeewoman for Muhlenberg Township for 42 years, as past president of the Berks County Republican Women's Council, was a member of the Pennsylvania Council of Republican Women for more than 50 years and was named Pennsylvania's "Republican Woman of the Year" in 2001.
Her love of the theater blossomed while attending Ohio University where she attained a degree in drama and speech in 1940. Her theater activities included the Mt. Gretna Players, the Lancaster Community Players, the Lititz Dramatic Theatre, Reading Community Players, and Green Hills Summer Theatre where she had served as president of the Board.
Arlyne was a past president of the Berks County Historical Society Auxiliary, past president and charter member of the Reading Area Pan Hellenic Society, past president of the Berks County Pharmaceutical Society Auxiliary, a board member of St. Joseph's Medical Center Auxiliary, and a past board member of the Muhlenberg Community Library.
Arlyne's professional career included various teaching assignments at Muhlenberg Township Schools, the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts, and Alvernia College. She worked for many years with her husband Malcolm, operating Meyer's Pharmacy in Temple PA.
Arlyne was preceded in death by her parents Maurice and Aurora (Phalm) Demmy and her husband Malcolm. She is survived by her sons Scott (Kathy), Malcolm Kent (Leahn) and Sheldon (Holly), her grandchildren Gretchen (Anthony) Wildman, John (Jodi), Nathan (Kate), Carina (Seth) Brownlee, Kendra (Brian) Hunter, Timothy (Valerie) and Andrew as well as 18 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday May 19 from 5-8 PM at Milkins Giles Funeral Home, 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple, PA, 19560. Funeral service will be on Wednesday May 20 at 10 AM at the funeral home with additional calling hours one hour before. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Manheim, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Muhlenberg Community Library, 3612 Kutztown Rd., Laureldale, PA.
