Alma E. Hill, age 98, passed away at Elmcroft of Reading Senior Living Community on May 31, 2017.
She was born in Pike Township, Berks County, PA on August 22, 1918, a daughter of the late Abraham Dierolf and Luella (Hafer) Dierolf.
Her husband, Ernest W. Hill, preceded her in death in 1996. They were married on June 27, 1942, for 54 years. She always had large vegetable and flower gardens and many fruit trees at their Riverview Park home and did a lot of canning and freezing food.
Alma grew up on a farm in the Oley Valley and graduated from Oley High School in 1937. She played field hockey, a trumpet in the school band and had different parts in school plays. After high school she worked as a lab assistant at Berkshire Knitting Mills in Wyomissing.
She was a Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher for many years. Alma was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Temple, PA. She served on the Altar Guild for her church for 42 years and for many years was the chairperson. When she was in her 80's she wrote a book of detailed information concerning the work of the Altar Guild.
Alma was the volunteer director of the Lutheran Pantry from 1978 to 1990. She managed food drives in 80 local churches, kept records and distributed food. She also managed the cheese and butter distribution for Berks County during that time. She organized volunteers and food and cooked for the homeless shelter on night a week. Alma received many distinguished service awards from the American Heart Association, Reading Emergency Shelter and Greater Area Involved Lutherans for all her volunteer efforts.
She also enjoyed traveling within the United States, Canada, Hawaii and Europe. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, quilting and reading.
Alma lived in her Wyomissing home for 17 years before moving to Elmcroft in 2014.
She is survived by two children, Rita A. Rohrbach, wife of Robert Rohrbach of Bern Township and Davie N. Hill, husband of Cynthia (Faust) of Muhlenberg Township; three grandchildren, Rebecca Foster, Tracey Weidner and Joshua Hill and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, George Dierolf and sister, Edna (Dierolf) Yoder.
Alma's family would like to thank Elmcroft Senior Living staff for all their caring and support over the last 3-1/2 years.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the Milkins Giles Funeral Home, 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple, PA officiated by Pastor Wayne Heintzelman. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday, June 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at which time the funeral service will begin. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service in Friedene's Church Cemetery, Oley, PA.
