Adam W. DeLong

Adam W. DeLong, 84, of Bernville, passed away Monday October 28th in Reading Hospital.

He was married to Dorothy I. (Miller) DeLong. Adam and Dorothy were married on August 27, 1949 and celebrated sixty four years of marriage.
The fourth son and one of fifteen children of the late George J. and Annie Amelia (Hoffman) DeLong, Adam was born on March 14, 1929, in a farmhouse in Perry Township, Berks County, near Shoemakersville.

He attended schools in Perry Township and Strausstown. After graduating with an Eighth Grade diploma, Adam began working to help support his parents and 14 siblings. In his early years, he worked as a farm hand for Arthur Lesher and for George M. Anthony's poultry business, and as a plumber for Edwin Stump Plumbing. He began his sixty year career as a carpenter with B. Frank Sheidy Builders in Temple. He later worked with his brother Kenneth for Kenneth J. DeLong Construction. In 1966, he started his own business DeLong Builders, Inc., remodeling and building new homes for forty-six years before retiring on March 30, 2006, at the age of seventy-seven.

During his active years, Adam was a member of the Bernville Grange, Northkill Rod & Gun Club, Berks County Builders Association, and St. Michaels Church in Tilden Twp.

His hobbies included playing cards, bowling, hunting, fishing, attending auctions, selling items at flea markets, and recycling with his grandson David

There are two daughters, Loretta Coltrane, wife of Dr. Robert Coltrane of Woolrich, Clinton Co. and Karen DeLong of Bernville.
There is one grandson, David Coltrane and his companion Tracy Wagner.
He is survived by his siblings, Anna Bohr, widow of Clair of Pine Grove, Marie, wife of Quentin Gettel of Rehrersburg, Fern, wife of Paul Ruth of Wernersville, Jean, widow of Richard Trostle of Reinholds, Alberta, wife of John Steffy of Reamstown, Eleanor, wife of Larry Keller of Womelsdorf, Linda, wife of Raymond Holland of Montoursville, Norman DeLong husband of Janice of Bernville, Larry DeLong, husband of Geri of Bethel.


Also, sister in laws, Janice C. DeLong, widow of Mark, Gloria, wife of Ralph Chapin, and Joan, wife of Roger Steffen.
There are many nieces, nephews and an Aunt Mary Wentzel.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Mark G., Marvin, Kenneth J., Russell, and Bruce DeLong.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 2nd at 10 AM in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, 206 N. Main St., Bernville with Rev. Mary Lou Eckels officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Hetzel's Church Cemetery, Pine Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing on Friday evening from 7 until 8:30 PM in the funeral home.
